Catnip

Catnip

Catnip is an herb in the mint family. It contains a chemical, nepetalactone. It is this chemical that triggers the amazing response many cats have when they encounter catnip. It is a fun treat for cats and their owners! Catnip also has a calming affect on many dogs! (See our product, Dog-Ezz).

FAQ

Is catnip safe?

You bet! Catnip is totally safe despite its drug-like euphoric effects on your feline friend.

Is catnip addictive?

Nope.

Where do you ship?

Currently we are only shipping to addresses in the United States.

Can Catnip harm people?

Nope. Catnip has been used as an herbal tea for centuries. Sleeplessness, nervous conditions and even the common cold have all been treated with catnip.

Do all cats react to catnip?

The catnip response is hereditary. Some cat don’t have the gene responsible for the catnip reaction. Also, kittens less than three months old usually don't respond to catnip. However, most cats love catnip!

How do I give my cat catnip?

Bag it.

All of our catnip products come loose-leaf, so we include a free cloth bag to use as a simple catnip toy. Just put a few tea spoons of catnip in the bag and close with the draw string. Your cat will know what to do!

Sprinkle it.

Sprinkle a pinch on a paper plate or other flat surface. Rolling the catnip between your thumb and index finger will help release the good stuff, (Nepetalactone). That's the active chemical found in catnip oil.

Make a simple sock toy.

Make a simple catnip toy using a clean, stray sock. Add a pinch or two of catnip to the sock and seal it tightly with a knot. Replace catnip every week or so to ensure that it is potent. Alternatively, sew the top shut with a needle and thread.

Roll up a simple paper ball.

Cats often amuse themselves by playing with everyday household items, so stick to the basics when giving catnip toys to your cat. Put a pinch of dried catnip into a small paper bag. Crush it into a tight ball for your cat to play with.

Use catnip for training.

If your cat has the bad habit of scratching furniture, use a catnip to train it out of this behavior. Sprinkle some on a scratching post for your cat. When your cat feels the overwhelming need to scratch, it will opt for the alluring surface of the scratching post instead of your good furniture.

Is there really a “Skinny Pete” ?

Yes! Skinny Pete is actually a very old female calico. She is a bit over weight and smells bad. When she is not eating, she enjoys sleeping, shedding and biting people. She is well versed in the art of kicking cat litter over huge areas of recently vacuumed carpeting. Her breath is bad too.

She is also famous for pooping, peeing and vomiting on the floor in quick succession. This is known as “the Skinny Pete hat trick”.

If you would like to adopt her, please contact us at: catlover@skinnypetescatnip.com

Note that she has all of her claws and may scratch you.
